In 1990, Vekselberg established the Renova Group
In 1996 Renova founded SUAL-Holding. Vekselberg became the President of SUAL Holding; since 2003 he has been the Chairman of the Board.
In 2007. SUAL Holding and Russian Aluminum company merged to form UC Rusal, Vekselberg chaired the Board of UC Rusal until 2012.
From 2002 to 2003, Vekselberg was Chairman of Tyumen Oil Company, TNK, and in 2003 - 2013 he was a member of the Board of TNK-BP, which was formed from TNK.
In 2010. Vekselberg was elected to head the Skolkovo Innovation Center. In 2019 - 2020 he chaired the Board of the Skolkovo Foundation; since December 2020 he is a member of the Board.
In 2021, Vekselberg was elected Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (Skoltech). He also chairs the Board of Trustees of the Skolkovo International Gymnasium.
