Epidemic as an Impulse. New Reading of VR and AR Technologies

COVID-19 has impacted the lives of countless companies and led them to turn to online solutions to help them at the forefront of customer satisfaction, convenience, life and health. The most widespread applications of XR technologies were seen in medicine, education, culture, and industry. For example, at the Stanford University School of Medicine, VR began to be used to combat the stress caused by the pandemic, museums and galleries – to have virtual exhibitions, and AR technologies were used to organize the work of remote experts, including medical workers. According to Digi-Capital forecasts, the practices accumulated during the pandemic will have an overall positive effect on the development of VR / AR industries, and the global market will reach $ 65 billion by 2024.

At the same time, the introduction of VR / AR technologies, which provide a lot of opportunities in conditions of limited movement and social contacts, turned out to be very modest and there are not many striking examples. In general, businesses are in no hurry to experiment and spend money on new technologies. International Data Corporation notes that the development of the VR / AR industry, on the contrary, has slowed down due to the spread of coronavirus infection. The tasks of business conferences are often solved in ZOOM, only a few organizers of exhibitions and festivals are ready to spend on a VR headset, and the development of XR technologies in accordance with the school curriculum seems to be an extremely difficult task.

• Impact of the pandemic on VR / AR. Why we didn't see explosive development?
• What are the scaling problems?
• The future of technology. How will "unreal" reality change business and our life?
